Christian emcee Illuminate spoke to Rapzilla about creating his new album Authenticity, discussed some of its highlights, the song “Eracism,” and ministering to people on the streets.
Illuminate spoke about how the song “Eracism” came together and described his experiences as being the only white person growing up in a black and Mexican neighborhood. He said that while touring, he admitted he experienced racism first hand in simple things like being seated in a restaurant. It inspired him to make this song and have a diverse cast on it.
When asked why the church doesn’t dive into the race topic more, Illuminate said:
“They don’t want to offend people for the most part…the world has influenced the church more than the church has influenced the world recently, unfortunately.”
The rapper then spoke about the authenticity of Christian hip-hop as a whole and said he doesn’t think it’s authentic all the time.
“As a whole, no,” he said. “A lot of people are aiming for the fame…God has made you authentically you for a reason.”
