Fedel & Dre Murray Sneak Backstage at a TobyMac Show

Rapper Fedel spoke to Rapzilla at SXSW about his insight to Christian hip-hop and the craziest thing he’s ever done for exposure.

He thinks that Christian rap needs the balance of different genres of hip-hop. “We don’t have people who are doing ‘this and this’. We have people who are doing ‘this, then you’re wrong’.”

Fedel feels it is important to “embrace” what other artists in Christian hip-hop are doing and move along, instead of condemning them.

In a funny story, Fedel described how he crashed a TobyMac show to meet him.

The emcee said he was with Dre Murray “years ago,” and he said, “I’m going to meet TobyMac.” At the end of the concert, he snuck past security through a back door and found Toby. He introduced himself and chatted it up with him for a bit. He also met DJ Maj and stayed in touch with him.

“TobyMac was extremely humble, extremely pleasant. He appreciated me, he gave me great advice,” said Fedel. “It was something I learned from him being where he was, the O.G. who’s like paved the way for all of us.”
