June is a notable month for a number of reasons. Not only is it Black Music Appreciation Month, but it is also National Caribbean-American Heritage Month. In recognition of this special month, here is a list of several artists of Caribbean descent who have made a mark in Christian Rap.

*This is not an exhaustive list

Redimi2 is a Christian rapper and reggaeton artist who hails from the Dominican Republic. He alongside his brother, JG, made history in their native country when they released their first album, Combinación Mortal in 2000, which was the first Christian rap album to ever hit the market there. It quickly gained popularity and became a bestseller. Since then, Redimi2 has gone on to release a number of albums and singles. His most recent releases are “Uno” and “Momentum” which were both released in 2021.

Papa San is a gospel reggae artist who has been active since the late 1970s. While he might not be a CHH artist, he has collaborated with them on a couple of occasions. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Papa San first began his music career as a dancehall artist, and quickly became one of the most prominent deejays in his country during the 1980s and 1990s.

In 1997, Papa San became a Christian and he transitioned from recording secular music to gospel. Later he relocated to Florida, where he now leads a church based in Lauderhill, Our Father’s Kingdom International Ministries. In 2013, he made an appearance in Lecrae’s album, Church Clothes 2, with the song, “The Fever.” He also collaborated with Da T.R.U.T.H, who was featured in his album One Blood, which was released in 2014.

His debut solo EP from 2015, 68 & Douglas, ranked within the Top 15 on four Billboard magazine charts. Social Club Misfits has also met with success, winning the GMA Dove Award in 2020 for their album Mood//Doom.

Raised in Miami, Aklesso is a hip-hop artist of Haitian and Togolese descent. He first delved into music-making when he was around 11 or 12 when his aunt and uncle purchased sound equipment for him. An athlete and scholar, he attended Liberty on a track scholarship, but continued to pursue music on the side and further develop his talent. In 2020, the artist released Worst Year.

Steven Malcolm

Steven Malcolm, a nominee for Rap/Hip Hop Recorded song of the year in 2021, is a Jamaican-American rapper known for blending reggae with hip hop. His music has garnered attention outside of the CHH world, and has been showcased in mainstream media on ESPN and “Black Ink Crew.” His latest album, Tree was released on June 3, and features Snoop Dogg, Jay-Way, and KB, to name a few.
