Rapper & Teacher Dwayne Reed Protests Unsafe School Conditions by Teaching Outside
Christian rap artist and teacher Dwayne Reed has been going above and beyond as an educator for years. You may remember him from his “Welcome to the 4th Grade” viral video. Well, now his 4th-grade class is being greeted in a different way.
Last week Reed was asked to come back to his school to teach after 300 days away. Prior to this, he had been doing remote learning with his students. His wife is eight months pregnant with their child, and who him, being inside is risky. His solution – teach outside of the school.
So far, this is what he’s done. Much like the mailman, he’s been there rain, shine, or freezing snow. He’s all bundled up with a laptop, extension cord, and everything else he needs to teach his students – 80% of which are at home.
Not every situation is the same, but for Reed in Chicago, he’s been threatened by CPS to go inside and teach. If they shut him down, the students will be hurt more than the teacher.
Told my scholars I might get locked out from virtual school tomorrow by CPS because I refuse to go into the building. 5 minutes later, I called on one of them and she didn’t respond.
Me: “Hey, what you up to?”
4th grader: “I’m emailing the mayor.”😭😭❤️
