4Against5 just announced
their newest addition to the label and he hails all the way from Amsterdam – Jay-Way. The rapper who refers to himself as an alien joins Ty Brasel and Steven Malcolm at the label. I interviewed Joseph Prielozny months back, and he alluded to the label’s next signing being someone he discovered on Rapzilla. I wonder if this was it! regardless, congrats Jay-Way, excited to see what happens.
Last week we learned of the untimely passing of 21-year-old artist JuiceWRLD. Although he was not part of CHH, anytime someone young and influential dies it’s truly a tragedy. A number of CHH artists sent out condolences and messages of disbelief, but a series of Tweets by Byron Juane, in particular, struck me hard:
“We have got to change Hip-Hop it wasn’t made to glorify drugs, objectify women and promote violence. It was meant to give a voice to the oppressed. Yet the music we make today oppresses our own people and paints the image that all of this is okay. We have to stop it’s killing us.”
You think about hip-hop messages in their earliest form, songs like “The Message” when Melle Mel says “it’s like a jungle out there…” and describes the hell on the streets. Even Public Enemy creating pro-black music to empower their people. Now, a lot of the music, which it has been for years, just pushes a culture that is literally killing the youth. So Byron’s point hits particularly hard and there are other convos sparked within that article as well. Check it out.
Last week we told you about
CHH Superfan Justin, who was diagnosed with Graves Disease and given just 4 months to live. He had a Christian Rap bucket list. Well, the CHH community got together and some of these dreams are coming true for him! On the day of this recording, he will be having a Bible study with Lecrae, Andy Mineo, and other Reach artists via telephone. Zauntee and V. Rose were also on his list and they reached out to him as well. This is amazing, keep praying and believing everyone.
Ok, here’s a sports roundup. Recently Wande had two tracks placed on an ESPN playlist
, “No Cap” and “No Ceilings.” 1K Phew and nobigdyl.’s track “Bigger Than Me” was placed on the NBA 2K20 playlist
, and lastly wordsplayed was a guest on NBC’s Off the Dribble for the ‘Hot Takes’ segment where he was always his hilarious self as he made fun of Philadelphia sports.
