‘City of Lies’ Trailer Released; Biggie Smalls’ Death Uncovered in Film

This week sees the release of the trailer from the upcoming movie “City Of Lies.”

The crime drama follows the LAPD investigation involving the unsolved shooting death of the Notorious B.I.G., aka Biggie Smalls.

“City Of Lies” stars Johnny Depp as LAPD detective Russell Poole and Forest Whitaker as journalist Jack Johnson.

In the trailer, we learn that they’ve discovered, what appears to be, a massive conspiracy within the department to cover up the details of the case.

It’s a nice change of pace to see Johnny Depp in a role that doesn’t require clown make-up in which he’s acting like a relatively normal (albeit, driven) human being. It’s always great to see the OG Forest Whitiker as well.

The Book

The upcoming film, based on a book titled LAbyrinth, is written by Randall Sullivan.

In the book, Sullivan connects, for the first time, Death Row’s former CEO Suge Knight to the death of both Biggie and Tupac.

Sullivan spent a lot of time with the real-life detective Poole, convincing himself of Knights guilt in the shootings.

After Poole left the LAPD in 1999, the FBI picked up where he left off but closed the case about a year and a half later.

Still Shook

The death of both legends, so close to each other, was a giant blow to the quick culture changing hip-hop of the 90s.

To this day, artists such as Lecrae would count one, or both, of these artists as influences on their music.

Their legacy is deep.

Last year marked the 20th anniversary of the artist’s death. It seems we’re more interested than ever to see if someone can find out who pulled the trigger that night.

USA Network premiered its anthology TV series about the death of Biggie, titled “Unsolved,” just three months ago as well.

It seems that we all have an interest in seeing justice served.

“City Of Lies” is directed by Brad Furman (“The Lincoln Lawyer”) and it hits theaters on Sept. 7.
