Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ trailer is released

Friday night, during Game 4 of the NBA Finals, Marvel released the first official trailer for Ryan Coogler’s (Creed, Fruitville Station) upcoming film, Black Panther. I’ve written a little about the movie before here on Rapzilla and you can check out my thoughts over here.

The trailer opens with Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and Ulysses Claw (Andy Serkis) having a conversation about Wakanda – the fictional African nation that is ruled by King T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman). They’re in an interrogation that looks like it happens just after the events in Avengers 2: Age of Ultron in which Claw loses his arm at the hands of Ultron. Claw’s laying it all out to Ross, explaining that the fictional city of El Dorado was never in South America, but Africa.

We’re introduced to a beautiful Wakanda, full of lush forests and giant waterfalls. Wakanda, to the rest of the world, is a tribal and stereotypical African nation but they are, in fact, the most technologically advanced nation in the world. This is very much in thanks to the rare metal, vibranium, that Ulysses Claw (Andy Serkis) wants more than anything else. This metal is the same that Captain America’s shield is made of and what most of the worlds’ militaries would love to get their hands on.

The imagery in this trailer is nothing like we’ve seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is, unabashedly, African, futuristic, and without a doubt, stunning. There is traditional weaponry, majestic vistas, heck, even a dude with a lip plate in a 3-piece. The dichotomy of the “old world” and “new world” we see during the course of this 2-minute trailer invokes a giant sense of awe and a feeling that I’ve been missing from the last few Marvel films. This is something new and it feels like it may be something special.

Did I mention that Run The Jewels’ banger “Legend Has It” is the soundtrack to the trailer? Sorry about that. That beat gets me hype enough to fight Man-Ape myself.

To debut the trailer, Marvel also gave us the first poster for the movie.

If you haven’t watched it yet, what are you waiting for? If you have, why are you reading this?

Watch it again.
