Rapzilla.com’s 15 Freshman of 2017
Gainesville, Florida-based artist Erica Mason is the first of two female Freshman this year.
She released an EP titled Pretty n Radical last October and has a mixtape on the way. With Christian hip-hop’s go-to music video director as her manager, Will Thomas, odds are on her side to succeed.
When did you decide that you wanted to pursue music?
I used to be the girl spitting freestyles in the cafeteria in school. I never took rapping seriously. It wasn’t until I gave my life to Christ and I heard my first Christian hip-hop song, that I realized you can be a hip-hop fan and still love God.
I was relieved! I only owned one Christian hip-hop CD, and it was a mixtape by a local artist named Tekulve. I listened to it literally everyday. But one day, I decided to have a little fun and create my own song. I showed it to my youth leader, and they asked me to perform it the following Sunday.
When I performed it, literally everyone in the building was crying. At that moment, I knew I was created to use music to impact lives.
What has been the most memorable moment of your career so far?
My most memorable moment is definitely when I realized that I charted No. 35 on iTunes. That was not my goal at all. But it was awesome and encouraging to know that for my first project ever as an artist, I was able to make such a huge impact.
What should fans be on the lookout for musically from you in 2017?
I will be releasing about four more music videos in the first half of the year. I also will be releasing another mixtape in the first quarter of 2017. I am looking to go on tour in the summer, opening for well-known Christian hip-hop artists. Basically, my fans can expect more music and better music — more real-life moments and more content that is relevant to what we all are going through.
