Shopé Speaks on ‘Jerseys’ Controversy & Message Behind ‘Courtesy’

Shopé spoke to Rapzilla at SXSW about his EP Know What’s Real, the controversy over the single “Jerseys,” and the track “Courtesy.”

He said in his experience he is finally accepting who God made him to be. “The whole concept of the project is to be real with yourself, don’t think of yourself more highly than you ought to, be real with God, and be real with those people who God has put into your life.”

Shopé said through these things, it’s the only way we can grow in God and in our faith.

He then referenced the song “Jerseys” and someone commenting saying he took a shot at Swoope. “No not at all,” he said.

Shopé said in his experiences he has encountered different Christian artists who speak about “the same team.” He said there are two different types of rappers out there.

“Same team means that we treat everybody with a measure of respect,” he said.

Shopé then spoke about the song “Courtesy” which is about the Christian rapper vs rapper who’s a Christian debate.

“I’m really speaking from a personal place,” said Shopé.

He opens up and deals with a lot of the struggles he was holding back from speaking about for awhile.
