Street Hymns has Watched Christian Hip-Hop Grow Up with Him

Rapper Street Hymns spoke to Rapzilla at SXSW about growing up listening to Christian hip-hop, how it has changed, and battle rap.

He said growing up, there was never a time when there wasn’t a studio in his house. As a kid his father would write him raps and he’d perform at churches.

Street Hymns said all these artists he was around became his role models and “shaped” who he is as an artist and a man.

Seeing first hand how Christian hip-hop has evolved, he knows the changes that have occurred over the years.

“As the culture evolves, you have Christians in this culture who are also having to adapt in culture, attempting to be in and not off…” he said. “I think the shift is amazing.”

Street Hymns understands that being out in the world is important but you can’t forget the “ministry.”

Another big element in hip-hop is rap battling. Street Hymns battles as well but doesn’t use anything that will put someone down. “I use bars,” he said. “I’m just going to spit some bars. You have my blueprint. Do what you want with it.”
