Sevin’s ‘Purple Heart’ Came From a Place of Addiction and Struggle

Christian emcee Sevin spoke to Rapzilla at SXSW to talk about the inspiration behind his new album Purple Heart.

“This Purple Heart thing is basically about having a heart after God…I came from the gang culture and a lot of the color…you identified yourself,” he said.

He said the color purple is our identity in God. The purple is royalty, and we are His children.

“I’m not a gangster no more, I’m not a hustler. I’m none of these things. I’m a child of the King,” said Sevin. “So being that He is the King, He is royal.”

He continued, “We have the right to be called the son’s of God.”

Sevin admitted that some of this album was written during his struggle. One of the songs he wrote was composed while he was still battling drug addiction. He is now delivered from it.

“A lot of times we judge people based on their stumble and not on their repentance,” he said. “And that’s what this album is about.”
