SXSW: Deraj on ‘For The People’, what’s next for him

Deraj and B. Cooper’s decision to make a project together was spontaneous.

Mid-conversation after Derek Minor’s music video shoot for “Party People”, an idea for the Reflection Music Group label mates to collaborate was birthed. Their agreement on a project title took a tad longer.

“We had fought for like, I don’t know how long,” Deraj told Rapzilla at SXSW 2016. “We wrote like 70 different titles out just brainstorming, trying to figure out what we were going to call it.”

Fittingly, the conception of the project’s concept was also random.

“The actual title came almost accidentally,” Deraj said. “I was sharing just where we were so far with the project to a good buddy of mine, and after I gave him a whole little spiel, he just kinda sat back and was like, ‘Man, sounds like y’all doing something for the people.'”

For The People stuck as a title, and the nine-track EP featuring Derek Minor, Kaleb Mitchell and more released on March 11.
