In a move that could signal a shakeup in the recognition of Christian Hip Hop, Billboard has decided to update its Christian/Gospel charts with a new metric for determining a song’s reach.
The music tracking entity will now include digital download sales and streaming data to its radio charting system. In an effort to give “a more holistic view of a song’s popularity”, Billboard will track YouTube, Spotify, Rhapsody and other online music streaming entities.
This change in philosophy will also include an expansion of Christian song tracking to extend beyond just traditional Gospel radio programming. This is an exciting development for the growth of Christian music and can shine a spotlight on the fan base of some of Christian Hip Hop’s finest.
