Review – Cram Session vol.2 “Back 2 Basics”

Antioch Alumni has accomplished a special feat in the realm of christian/holy hip hop (well, at least my realm). They've produced a cd full of tracks that hit hard on three of the most important qualities of the genre; content, production, and lyricism (well, at least my three).

Cram Sessions Vol. 2 is a top combination of all three. Antioch Alumni has compiled a talented group of emcees and producers to cram lyrical sessions on the second chapter of this compilation.

Content

The choice of emcees for Cram Sessions prove one thing, like-minded people can produced a cohesive product that will appeal to many. The introduction, featuring spoken word by Sa-rah, and the final track "Who Woulda Thought" (featuring Wonder Brown, Nunico, Mirko, & Gideon Valor) breaks this down. Songs that talk about real life situations, quietly minister to the hearts of the lost while edifying the souls of believers.

Production
The beat choices on Cram Sessions mostly cover the east subgenre of Holy Hip Hop. Most of the tracks have an underground sound like "Let Em Know" (feat, Neahe Miller; produced by Omari), "Random" (feat. Disciple, Mirko, & Fiya; produced by C-Kret), and "It Ain't a Game" (feat, Gideon Valor, Excal, & Mirko; produced by Theory Hazit)). But there are also some radio friendly joints like the Juma produced "Bounce" and "Back 2 Basics" (produced by UnEarth).

"Return to Sender" (produced by C-Kret) is a stand out track that uses choice chopped samples that allow the emcees (Neahe Miller, Sa-Rah, Gideon, & Theory Hazit) to easily dissect the thump & snares as they reminisce over lost ones to the prison system.

Lyricism
With compilations, you usually get a hodge podge of talented emcees that skillfully ramble on tracks with freestyles and throw away rhymes. This doesn't seem to be the case on Cram Sessions Vol. 2. Each of the emcees, while bringing their own skill and abilities, connect well on every track. It's as if most if not all of the compilation was recorded in the same studio at nearly the same time (which may be the case). The union is that obvious amongst the Cram Session emcees.

Cram Sessions Vol. 2 is well worth the few clicks and pecks on your cpu keyboard that it may take for you to shell out a few minuscule clams to order it. Your ears will thank you.
