NFL MVP Cam Newton did not play his best game of the season on Super Bowl Sunday, and in response to his critics, Carolina Panthers wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery quoted Christian hip-hop artist Eshon Burgundy in an interview after the Panthers’ 24-10 loss to the Denver Broncos.
“I listen to Christian rap,” Cotchery said, “and I have a guy I listen to named Eshon Burgundy. He made this quote in one of his raps — ‘They’ll hail you to nail you.'”

This quote comes from the third verse of Eshon Burgundy’s song “Gunz X Rosez,” which he released a music video for in December — just about a month before the NFL Playoffs began.
Eshon noted on social media that “they hail you to nail you” is a quote from hip-hop legend Lauryn Hill, who said the rhyme in her song “Superstar” from The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
