Sam Ock tells story behind his Rapzilla ‘Freshmen 2015’ song ‘Hypocrite’

Sam Ock recently walked us through the thought process behind his song “Hypocrite,” track No. 6 of the Rapzilla Freshmen 2015 compilation album.

Ock said his lyrics were based off of him identifying with the older son in the Biblical story of the Prodigal Son.

“I grew up in a very religious environment, and so I grew up as a legalist,” Ock said. “I thought that being a good kid, and doing these right things is what gains you clout in the faith-based society.

“Because of that, I also grew up with a lot of entitlement, like ‘God, look at all this stuff I’ve given up for you. Look at all this stuff I’ve chosen to forgo because I know that’s the right thing to do. And why am I going through all this pain? Why am I not strong enough to fight these sins?”
