TheKnuBlack (formerly known as Out of the Blue) is different. The duo of Kay Sade and KnuOrigen use cartoon visuals and Rap Genius-necessary lyrics that are atypical of hip-hop acts, but they make it work and stand out as a result.
And they make it work because both of them can spit. Their latest project, Van Goh, earned a nomination for Best Free Project of 2016 on Rapzilla.com.
When did each of you decide that you wanted to pursue music?
KnuOrigen: That's a tough question. I have been writing since middle school, but I didn't start making music until senior year of high school with a friend. It was originally for fun, but then I started to enjoy it as a medium of expression. I kept doing it for fun with the goal of pleasing Christ, but it was not until a couple years into my marriage where I realized that this is an expensive hobby that should be put on the back burner or taken more seriously. I chose the latter.
Kay Sade: I think I've always known that I wanted to do something music-related in life. I grew up performing in different ensembles and recently graduated with my bachelors in audio engineering. As far as hip hop goes, I was a freshman in college still new to Christian rap, and I saw so much creative potential in the genre. It wasn't until I met HeavvyFaith and KnuOrigen that I felt confident in pursuing rap as a career.
What has been the most memorable moment of your careers so far?
God has blessed us with so many, but if we had to choose one, we’d probably say the whole process behind creating “The Tank”, from the songwriting to the concept behind the visual. Collectively, it probably all came together over a span of a few hours.
We travel a lot to work on music together, and we have a limited time to get things done, so for something of such good quality to come from such a short time together it was a major blessing. And it was encouraging to watch so many people from different parts of the Christian hip-hop community resonate with it.
What should fans be on the lookout for musically from you in 2017?
As for 2017, tell the Village that they should keep an eye out for more dope visuals and, of course, a level-up on the music with a new group album in the works, Lord willing.
