Las Vegas-based emcee JGivens’s song “Attack of the Clones,” track No. 6 on his new album Fly Exam, featured an artist who played a role in his introduction to songwriting.
JGivens told Christianity Today’s Leadership Journal that he stumbled onto art about five years ago after he became a Christian.
“I stumbled upon Jackie [Hill Perry] on YouTube,” JGivens said, “and I went to the church that was listed at the bottom of the video she was on. I walked up and I said, ‘Hey, I think I’m a fake Christian.’ Then I went home, and read the Bible for myself. Then I was reading the Bible and I was getting bored, and I was like ‘Alright God, well, I still want to hang out, but I don’t want to read this till I fall asleep.’ Then I started writing what I was reading in rap form, and it just didn’t stop.”
JGivens didn’t remember the particular video, but it could’ve been Hill Perry’s poem below. It came out nearly five years ago, and the description points viewers toward p4cm.com, the website of the church, Passion 4 Christ Movement, which JGivens said he attended. In April 2014, Humble Beast Records announced the signing of JGivens, just a few months after the label had signed Hill Perry.
