Demetrius Alexander Springer was born June 5th, 1985 in Cincinnati, Ohio. His early years echo the same sound of many youth of this generation. Demetrius was an early witness to the binding power of sin. As family members and peers became slaves to negative surroundings and circumstances, an unhealthy lust for the things of this world was born in Demetrius.
With no real resistance to intervene, Demetrius continued to cultivate a sinful mindset and lifestyle. While living with his mother who battled drug addiction, Demetrius was allowed limited access to his birth father. However, this addiction would lead to Demetrius moving in with his father for the first time at the age of 15.
While living with his father, Demetrius was introduced to Church and Christian living. However, having been immersed in worldly ideology, the image of Christ was made to look less attractive in his eyes. Though attending church, Demetrius struggled with doing things in the way he first knew. Being greatly influenced by secular music and hip-hop culture, Demetrius began writing and performing secular rap under the moniker, “Baby D.A.S.”. This aided to further thrust Demetrius into the world and away from the will of God. Numerous distractions kept his eyes from viewing the fullness of God. One of which was women. Demetrius fathered his son, Demetrius, Jr., prior to finishing high school.
As with all stories, a turning point came in Demetrius life. In 2005, Demetrius was introduced to the ministry of Elder G. Craig Lewis. Minister Lewis delivered a powerful word concerning secular music and the youth of today. This message, coupled with the untimely death of Demetrius’ childhood friend Akeem, brought Demetrius to repentance and full submission to Jesus Christ. Demetrius was befriended by Matthew Bracey, who had recently submitted himself to Christ in similar fashion. Matthew’s new found love and dedication to the Lord led to his founding the independent Christian label, “Ain’t Yo Average Music Ministry”. Demetrius had been greatly moved by local Christian rappers to commit his gift to the Lord as well. He did. And Demetrius chose A.Y.A. Music as the platform to do so.
In 2006, Now known as “Deacon D.A.S.” Demetrius released his first recording as a Christian artist. The EP, entitled, “Deaconstruction: Destroy and Rebuild” was the first project released by Ain’t Yo Average Music. His work on the Deaconstruction EP earned Demetrius several feature slots on various albums and compilations. Most notably was his addition to the Christian Rap group, “ANTHUM”. Their self-titled EP released in 2007.
2007 would also be the year Demetrius would promise himself to his then fiance’, Keisha Baskin. The two were married in the spring.
Demetrius’ first full-length release was another first for A.Y.A. Music. The album, entitled, “Losing My Religion” was officially released March 17th, 2009. In addition to continuing to grow as a Christian musician, the Lord has called Demetrius to the pulpit on several occasions to proclaim the Word of God. Demetrius “Deacon D.A.S.” Springer is humbly walking toward everything that God desires for him to be.
