Review – D-M.A.U.B. – Urban Legend

D-M.A.U.B. - Urban Legend

When I think about rappers with high levels of energy, there are a few that immediately come to mind. Of course there’s the whole 1-1-Six camp, RedCloud, and Braille to name a few. Stage presence is one thing, but having that translate into your music is another thing entirely. When I think of a rapper that has high energy on an album, my mind goes right to that Cincinnati emcee D-M.A.U.B. because he has an energy like none other. In his latest release Urban Legend, the homey takes his energy to another level and presents a very enjoyable album.

After kicking off the album with a Godfather type intro, which quickly gets flipped into other sounds & tempos, you’re right into the heart of the album. Every track that D-M.A.U.B. gives you on this album is hype and in your face. The production is upbeat and high tempo, and the lyrics are there to match. It’s definitely a project that makes you want to get on your feet and move. Although, I’m sure that if you decide to do that, you will have worked up a pretty good sweat and will need a Gatorade afterward.

As musically appealing as this album is, the thing that shouldn’t be lost in this project is the lyrical content, which can happen fairly easily. Even though this is a project meant to get you moving and nodding your head, it is chock full of spiritual truth that points you directly to Jesus Christ. Remember, then name of his label is One Route Entertainment, and that one route is the Way, the Truth, and the Life: Jesus Christ. Each song is meant to point the listener to that ultimate goal, which is their need to have him as savior. Songs like “My Way,” “People Crazy,” and “In the Beginning I Knew Everything About the End” clearly depict the Christian overtones that are meant to grasp the listener. When the listener looks at the world around them and all of its ills, they should be encouraged by an album that gives them a solution.

One of the things that I really like about Urban Legend is that it’s so fast paced that there’s no slowing down until you’ve reached the end of the album. And then when you do reach the end, you just want to put it on repeat and do it all over again. If there’s anything worth skipping on this project then I’d have to say that it’s the opening track, which doesn’t sound as clean as it could be, especially with its transitions; but aside from that, I’m absolutely in love with this album and think that D-M.A.U.B. did a wonderful job of putting together an album that gives the listener what they want while leaving them wanting for more.
